Among international travelers, outdoor enthusiasts and those interested in emergency preparedness, Katadyn water filter devices and assorted water purification items are considered the most popular brand of drinking water decontamination products in the world. For almost 100 years, Katadyn has been offering mobile desalinators, silver-based and chlorine sterilizing substances and water filters to individuals as well as international relief organizations assisting in underdeveloped areas where clean drinking water is scarce.
Recently, the Katadyn headquarters located in Wallisellen-Zürich, Switzerland, announced two additional companies promoting camping and survival products—Trek n' Eat (freeze dried foods) and Optimus (outdoor accessories and stoves).
Ceramic filters are micro-porous and contain silver, which inhibits bacterial growth that could cause serious gastrointestinal illness. Pore size of these filters is 0.0002 millimeters, or 0.2 microns. Since most bacteria are between 0.2 and 0.5 microns in size and protozoa is between one and 15 microns in size, ceramic filters made by Katadyn are effective at filtering out pathogens often infecting water found in lakes, streams and rivers.
Silver treatment also prevents algae and mold growth from developing within the filter due to consistently moist conditions. Cleaning the filter with soap and hot water whenever possible can help keep the filter clean and free of mold. Be aware that this type of filtration system does not eliminate any chemicals that may be polluting the water, only bacteria, protozoa and other microorganisms larger than a virus.
Filters containing activated carbon granules removes unpleasant tastes and odors from water as well as harmful inorganic and organic agents such as pesticides. Activated carbon is a highly absorbent substance that produces a small electropositive charge capable of attracting a variety of impurities. When water is poured over the carbon, any negative ions contained in contaminates are absorbed by the granules.
Filters enhanced with activated carbon are most effective when offering between 0.5 and 50 microns of protection. Most filters provide anywhere from 12 to 24 ounces of carbon made of coconut shell, bituminous and wood carbons. Coconut shell is more expensive but it is considered the most effective type of activated carbon filter to use when decontaminating potential drinking water.
Extremely fine glassfiber filters contain two layers supporting a depth filter with a 0.3 pore size capable of straining protozoa and bacteria from water. Glassfiber water filters used by Katadyn are pleated, offer a large surface and efficiently absorbs water pollutants and particles.
Katadyn offers customers three different series of water filters: the Endurance Series, the Back Country series and the Ultralight series.

Endurance Series
Backcountry Series Products
Ultralight Series Products
This series contains
the lightest water filtration systems available and are meant for
individual use. Perfect for day excursions or short trips, water filters
that are part of the Ultralight Series should only be used for clear
water decontamination purposes.
While using a Katadyn water filter will effectively eliminate bacteria, cysts and protozoa in water that comes from lakes, rivers and streams, pocket-style water filters will not remove viruses less than 0.2 microns in size. To clean water suspected of harboring viruses, always use a water filter in combination with water purification tablets to ensure you are not ingesting harmful viruses.
